Custom cars dazzle at the 2011 Detroit Autorama

The Detroit Autorama is a large showcase of custom-built cars held each year at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan. It is put on by the Michigan Hot Rod Association and is held every year in March. As of 2006, the show has been in existence for 54 years. The Detroit Autorama started off as a hot rod show that would raise enough funds to build a dragstrip for the MHRA. The first Autorama was held at the University of Detroit Field House in January 1953. Around 1,500 people attended the inaugural event. In 1954, the MHRA decided it needed a larger space to hold the show in, so they chose to hold the show at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. In 1955, the show moved again to the Detroit Artillery Armory, before moving back to the Fairgrounds in 1956. The first Autorama to be held at Cobo Hall was in 1961. In 1957, the MHRA hired Don Ridler as promotions agent and publicist for the show. Ridler booked bands that were popular at the time to play at Autorama. Popular acts like Duane Eddy and...

2010 Abt Audi R8 GT R

The ABT R8 GT R – A motorsport champion for the road

Sure, the R8 is no lame duck, and this is even more so once the sports car has been tuned by ABT Sportsline. The result is a real model athlete, which does not just ooze power, but also doesn’t have a single gram of fat on its body. With the limited version
ABT R8 GT R (with only 25 units available) engineers and designers have gone one logical step further: experience from motorsport flowed into the design, and all the components have been systematically trimmed to ensure a light-weight construction and optimal weight distribution. As a result not just the bonnet, front and rear aprons, the adjustable rear wing or the tailgate are made of carbon, but the outline edge on the rear, the external mirrors and the door panel are also made of the same material. The side windows are made of Makrolon - the high-tech polycarbonate does not just reduce weight, but also has impressive strength properties. The result: the ABT R8 GT R is a proud 100 kilos lighter than its series counterpart.

How much motorsport the team, which comprises the current winners of the DTM and the ADAC GT Masters, actually brings to the road can be seen from the details: Recaro racing seats, a 4-point seat belt system, stainless steel roll-over bar with seat belt attachment, hand-held fire extinguisher or an ABT Sports steering wheel made of carbon – the people at ABT have thought of everything. “The
ABT R8 GT R is an uncompromising racing car for the road, and provides maximum performance”, states Christian Abt. The successful motorsport racer indicates his responsibility for the development of this extraordinary vehicle and is impressed with the result. “I recommend trying the ABT R8 GT R on a racing track from time to time, as the car is great fun to drive there", says the General Manager of ABT who is responsible for technology. The adjustable front panel allows sports inserts; the ABT driver overalls, helmet, racing shoes and gloves are just as much as part of the effective ABT R8 GT R special equipment as an on-board video system and the expandable data module.

The well-trained sports car has enormous performance potential: instead of the series-standard 525HP (386 kW), the 5.2 FSI in the ABT R8 GT R provides a massive 620HP (456 kW) and as a result the light car travels extremely quickly: the top speed is 325 km/h, it does 0-100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and the GT R reaches the 200km/h mark in a mere 9.9 seconds. In order to ensure that the power can be optimally applied on the road and on the race track, height-adjustable ABT Sports suspension and adjustable dampers are standard on the ABT R8 GT R. The ceramic brake system with modified brake pads has been adjusted to meet the enormous performance potential of the super sports car. The extremely light ABT CR alloys round off the package. On the front axle they are mounted in 9x19 inch and on the rear axle in 11x19 inch. The Michelin sports cup tyres are the perfect choice for the car. The ABT R8 GT R is a unique vehicle which provides maximum driving enjoyment.
ABT R8 GT R has been designed for driving at the limit: from the weight-optimised exhaust unit to the ABT Titanium special coating – ABT’s love of motorsport can be seen in every detail.

2010 Lumma Design Porsche Panamera

•Panamera turns into the LUMMA CLR 700 GT
•Carbon dominates the aerodynamic components
•Luxury interior made of leather and ultra-suede
•Three-part wheels “Racing Edition“ in 21 inches

The Porsche Panamera gets a new character in Winterlingen, Germany. LUMMA Design remains unimpressed by the four doors of the Gran Turismo. The engineers see an automobile with racing character, tailor a carbon coat to the outer shell and refine the interior with precious leather. This way, the Panamera turns into the LUMMA CLR 700 GT.

Carbon and Kevlar mould the aerodynamics

At LUMMA Design, the Gran Turismo from Zuffenhausen is equipped with a large number of carbon parts which both enormously boosts the agility as well as the sporty appearance. Therefore, the cup spoiler sword, the lateral air inlets, the rear skirt corners and the entire rear diffuser are made of carbon, as well as the side skirt and the rear wing with the aluminium stilts. The sports bonnet with the two additional air vents has also been made of the ultra-light material and is also reinforced with a Kevlar bracing. The aerodynamics kit is completed with the front spoiler with LED indicators, wing extensions and the rear skirt with the air vents.

The dynamic look is underlined with headlight rings in the car colour and shaded rear lights. The according sound is provided by the end muffler “Sportsound“ with its four stainless steel end pipes, each measuring 100 millimetres in diameter.

Three-part forged wheels in 21 inches

Wheels from the “Racing Edition“ render a racing look to the CLR 700 GT. LUMMA Design fits these three-part rims with the forged star hub and the stainless steel outer well in 10.5x21 inches with tyres measuring 265/30 at the front- and 12x21 inches with ultra-high performance tyres measuring 305/30-21 at the back axle.

LUMMA Design combines sports and luxury in the interior. The aluminium pedals and the light alloy foot rest are exemplary for the performance of the car. The high-class interior is achieved with an entire leather- and ultra-suede equipment with silver decoration stitches.

These perfectly match with the silver seat-belts at all four seats. The noble character of the car is enhanced with the type plate displaying the consecutive serial number, the door sills with the illuminated lettering “CLR 700 GT“ as well as the velour floor mats and the boot mat with the LUMMA coat of arms logo and leather edging.

LUMMA Design is already working on a performance enhancement up to 700 hp (515 kW). Already now available is the engine optics kit in red with carbon inlay and the coat of arms logo.

Once again, the CLR 700 GT confirms LUMMA Design’s dedication for automobile refinement. The individual components follow the overall concept in terms of shape, material selection and processing. This is the only way how each car can obtain its individual character and the reason why LUMMA Design has made a name for itself
